Mormon Means Family
Family is one of the most important things to any Mormon but what exactly does family to us? We all know the meaning of the word family according to the dictionary but to a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints it means so much more. Family is one of the cornerstones of our religion. God wants us to have families that is why he told Adam and Eve to “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28).
What Is A Family?
Family is, of course, those people who are related to you. Your parents, grand parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, etc. But it is also so much more. Family is any group of people who care for and are there for one another.Church is a family. Yesterday at church we had a baby blessing take place and so many people came from other wards for the event that the chapel was chock full. I had never seen our ward so full before. These people were all there to bless, pray for and support the little girl and her parents. They were family. The world is a family. Every human on the planet is related to one another for we are all children of God (Eph. 3:14–15 & Gal. 3:26).
Is Family Forever?
Absolutely! Matt. 16:18 says, “whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven”, this means that when we are sealed in the temple we are joining our families together for eternity. When we pass from this life we will be reunited with our families, including our ancestors. They are the reason we do temple ordinances, so that we may spend eternity with them as God has promised (D&C 148″38).
Making the Family Strong
In these latter days we must remain strong in our faith. Part of doing so is to strengthen our families. Family Home Evening is a big part of that. By praying together and teaching our children about the glory of God and Christ we strengthen not only their bonds with our Heavenly Father but our own as well. Attend church regularly, as a family, and you will notice your children taking more and more of an interest in who God and Jesus are. You will see them develop a relationship with God and Jesus. So stay strong in the lord, he will rain down blessings upon you (Ezekiel 34:26).
