Remember The Sabbath Day
The lord commanded us to “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). This is confusing to many, “What does it mean?” is something heard often when mentioning this commandment from God. In a nutshell, it means you should spend the Sabbath resting and praying. All to often people forget the prayer and focus solely on the resting. In this post I am going to try and explain why both things are needed if we are to return to Heavenly Father in the Celestial Kingdom.
What is the Sabbath?
When god created the universe he worked on it for 6 days and rested on the 7th day. That 7th day is the Sabbath. It is a day of rest and reflection. God is perfect, in every way, and doesn’t need to rest like we do but he did so anyway. He did this to set an example for us, to let us know that life is not all about work.
Keeping the Sabbath Holy
As latter day saints it is our responsibility to keep the Sabbath day holy. The first way we do this is by attending church. In church we fellowship with others so that we may all learn better how to serve God. We also teach others, though we often don’t realize it. We also keep the Sabbath holy is partaking of the sacrament. Keeping the Sabbath holy is a covenant (Exodus 31:16) and we take sacrament we are renewing that and all other covenants we have with God.
So I Can’t Do Anything?
On the contrary, while the law that was handed down to Moses by God contained over 600 rules of what we can and cannot do on the Sabbath day they basically all boil down to one thing, “Don’t create anything.” No cooking, no working, no lighting of fires (Exodus 35:3), etc. I have heard people say that to keep the Sabbath holy we can’t play or have a good time but I strongly disagree. God wants us to be happy and healthy, which is why he created the Sabbath. By resting and recharging for the upcoming week we stay healthier than we would if we worked 7 days a week every week. If, for you, resting means lying in bed doing nothing but staring at the boob tube then by all means do that. On the other hand, if what helps you rest and relax is a good game of catch with the kids or playing video games then you should do that. Whatever will help you recharge your batteries for the week to come.
I short, the Sabbath is a great and wonderful day created by God for us (Mark 2:27). We need to follow God’s law to keep the Sabbath holy each in our own way but remember, when in doubt…pray and ask God if what you are doing is right in his eyes. He will let you know.
Please let us know how you keep the Sabbath day holy in the comments section below.
